McGraw-Hill Higher Education, (MHHE) is a leading provider of print and electronic materials serving the college market, publishing instructional materials including textbooks, lab manuals, study guides, testing materials, software, and multimedia products.

MHHE has an exciting opportunity for an Executive Editor in our Humanities, Social Science and World Languages (HSSL) Division in San Francisco, CA, working specifically within the World Languages group.

The Executive Editor is responsible for the acquisition, development, and publication of books and other print and digital materials. Accountable for achieving editorial quality and profitability for each title published under her/his sponsorship.

Responsibilities:

  • Prospect for new publications by attending professional meetings, making campus visits, reviewing periodicals, interacting with existing authors, and responding to unsolicited proposals. Negotiate favorable publishing agreements which satisfy company quotas, revenues, profits, and corporate standards
  • Work with authors to produce high quality manuscripts that serve the needs of the instructors
  • Prepare and propose to editorial management a formal written plan for each title published which include P&L statements, schedules, market dynamics and strategy for success
  • Work with all appropriate company personnel to guide the timely and profitable publication of completed manuscripts
  • Work with senior editorial management to develop short term and long term goals for the publishing program
  • Analyze and evaluate markets, competing companies, and product and market requirements. Set strategic goals for list
  • Develop product list strategies, new product profiles, describing purpose and intent of future publications
  • Assist with training and development of editorial discipline team
  • Achieve specific acquisition and sales goals for the editorial discipline team
  • Manage the development of contracted titles from initial contract through promotion of book. Monitor production schedules and work with editing and production personnel in resolving author-related problems
  • Prepare strategies for promotional activities facilitating the exchange of information between author, sales, and marketing
  • Coordinate specialized market research studies and other special projects

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • 7-10 years editorial experience in educational publishing
  • 4 years supervisory experience
  • Thorough understanding of the publishing process
  • Thorough understanding of discipline(s)
  • Ability to proactively and creatively solve problems related to program development
  • Direct experience with planning, scheduling, budgeting, supervising staff and vendors, negotiating
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel
  • Classroom teaching experience preferred
  • Master’s degree in a foreign language highly preferred
  • Ability to travel domestically up to 30%
