Advertising Privacy Director

Yahoo! is looking for someone who is passionate about privacy issues and who deeply familiar with the online advertising marketplace. If you enjoy problem-solving and have an uncanny ability to see both the big picture while tending the details, we want to talk to you.

The role of Advertising Privacy Director will be a key contact with engineering, product management, product marketing, and key members of the Yahoo! Legal Department to manage privacy issues across Yahoo’s advertising platforms and products. These services span the globe and often require partnering with international teams on matters of local privacy policy and data transfer. This role is expected to drive the design, develop and implement complementary ad privacy education programs and compliance efforts. This role is a mix of hands-on and strategic planning – reporting to the Sr. Director of Ad Privacy and Data Governance.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing strategic planning and coordinates development of advertising opt-out platforms;
  • Partnering with appropriate teams to review development plans and provide privacy guidance;
  • Writing specific privacy disclosures for advertising platforms and works with legal to develop partner templates;
  • Developing process guidelines and training programs for ad privacy compliance;
  • Making key decisions and judgment calls where policy application and compliance is involved;
  • Communicate complex privacy and data issues within the organization and to external parties;
  • Keeping product disclosures and privacy policies accurate and up to date;
  • Evangelizing and advocating privacy throughout the organization;
  • Maintaining internal privacy policy documentation.

Qualified candidates will possess the following skills and qualities:

  • Familiarity with TRUSTe, COPPA, HIPAA, GLBA and EU data protection rules; and exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Understanding of the intricacies of online advertising (sponsored search, display advertising, ad networks, exchanges, web beacons, opt-outs)
  • Ability to distill very complex issues into straightforward, easy to understand recommendations that can be conveyed both in writing and verbally;
  • Ability to think and act on the fly in high-pressure situations and be highly adaptable to a rapidly changing climate;
  • Awareness of state, federal and international regulatory environments, industry guidelines and “best practices,” and competitors’ policies regarding use of customer data, privacy and security;
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize projects, as well as the ability to appropriately manage expectations and make difficult judgment calls;
  • Excellent people skills are required in order to work with Yahoos across the organization – sales, marketing, legal, customer care, product teams, as well as external partners and clients;
  • Attention to minute detail and the ability to work through complex problems and arrive at creative solutions in a timely manner

The following background and experience are helpful:

  • Six to ten years of experience with policy, privacy, or security compliance issues at a mid to senior level for a company with significant to dedicated online presence; CIPP certification a plus;
  • Deep and broad understanding of online advertising product offerings;
  • Legal familiarity a significant plus as qualified candidates must be able to work closely with legal counterparts and must be very comfortable with contracts, regulation, and legal notices.
  • Strong knowledge of Internet technologies (HTML, JavaScript) and database structures and workflow
